Crystal Peak, in the middle of the Sevier Desert, Utah, shines in the first light of dawn, while the full moon sets behind Wheeler Peak, far off in Great Basin National Park, Nevada, in early February 2025. Surrounding that, the rest of the snow-capped Snake Range is lit by pink sunrise lighting in early May 2017. The eastern Sevier Desert receives the flat lighting of an 86% solar eclipse, 21 August 2017.
Crystal Peak, catching the tiniest bit of sun, stands out from its moonlit desert surroundings due to its reflectivity.
Technically "Tunnel Spring Tuff", it is essentially made of quartz sandstone, with optical properties somewhat similar to the
retroreflective paint used for road signs.
The moonset directly behind Wheeler Peak, just minutes after sunrise, as seen from this viewpoint, won't occur again until sometime after the year 2100. The Sevier Desert being covered by a near-total solar eclipse won't happen again until the year 2106.
